Thorney Beginnings, Marvellous Middles and Moorends

This was the first show since 2003’s Your Village No Longer Exists where we did not recruit a community cast. Commissioned by the Right Up Our Street programme this 75 minute show for a family audience told stories from the past and the present that we collected during a residency in Thorne and Moorends, two neighbouring communities in South Yorkshire.

The show – which was performed in community spaces across the two towns – mixed verbatim accounts from meetings in food banks, dancing classes and dining clubs; song; dance; comedic moments; and a number of simply staged visual set pieces which aimed to create a performance that could hold the attention of both young and old.

For this show we worked with a composer and musician – Matt Marks – who underscored much of what we did with a huge range of instruments, and who would be central to much of our work (along with Hannah Stone) for the next couple of years.
